Iberia pilots set to strike Dec. 18, 29

Iberia (IB) pilots, represented by the SEPLA union, announced one-day strikes Dec. 18 and Dec. 29 to protest the company's plans to create Iberia Express (ATW Daily News, Nov. 24).

Iberia asked SEPLA to call off the “unfair, inopportune and unjustified” pre-Christmas strike, reiterating that “pay and working conditions of current Iberia employees will not be affected by the creation of Iberia Express. Indeed, more pilots will be detailed to long-haul routes to the extent that Iberia Express takes over short- and medium-haul routes.”

IB will implement a contingency plan to minimize the impact on customers as soon as the government decree, detailing minimum services during the strike, it announced.

Negotiations with unions have been ongoing since the end of 2009 when IB announced plans to launch a carrier to reduce losses of its medium- and short-haul network and compete with the increasing presence of low-cost carriers in the Spanish market, as well as the rapid expansion of the country's high speed train network.

The company has reached agreements with ground staff and cabin crew on productivity measures to address loss-making short- and medium-haul routes, but failed to win an agreement with SEPLA after two years of negotiations and more than 60 meetings.

International Airlines Group (IAG), IB’s holding company since merging with British Airways in January, officially endorsed the launch of Iberia Express some months ago (ATW Daily News, Oct. 7).

Last month, IB appointed Luis Gallego CEO of its new subsidiary airline, which will start operations at the end of March 2012. Gallego is former COO of Vueling Airlines, the Barcelona-based LCC in which IB holds a 45.85% stake.
